Is your Domain Registration info really Private?
I recently researched a topic many fellow bloggers may find useful - Private Domain Registration.
It is common knowledge that GoDaddy claim to provide Private Domain Registation through their Domain by Proxy service. Network Solutions also have an equivalent.
Whats not as widely known is that these services do not in fact provide true anonimity. Have a read about how some people found that out the hard way.
I’ve looked around for a better service and the two that have come up at least sounding far better are Katz Global and MediaOn.org. These companies do not require you to provide personal info when you register a domain with them, only an email address. Thats right, not even your name or any other contact details. And they claim that they will not give your information to anyone else for any reason. They also use anonymous payment methods.
Katz charge $19.95 per year for a .com domain. MediaOn.org charge 12 euros, with the anonymous option free. MediaOn also offer clustered hosting, as opposed to the shared hosting of Katz. I paid 18 euros for 12 months clustered hosting with them. (Clustered hosting is in theory much more reliable then simple shared hosting, but it is not always implemented properly.) They do make a lot of promises, so for the time being I am hosting one domain with them to see how they actually stack up.
While we’re on the subject of safe blogging practices, here’s another article that has a few more tips on blogging anonymously: How to Blog Safely (About Work or Anything Else).
